We’ve had quite a few young ladies come in to the store lately looking for cute fabric to embellish cork boards for their bedroom or dorm. Given we have 8,000 gorgeous bolts to choose from, we thought we would have Caitlyn (my niece) and Jane (Katy’s daughter) create their own fun cork boards under the direction of Kristi Lynn.

This is a fast and fun project that would be fun as a grown up sip and craft event, or would be fun for a mom and child outing.
Here’s what you need:
Cork Board – you can get them at Staples, Walmart, or Amazon
Measuring Tape or Ruler
Fabric of your choice
Odif 505 Temporary Adhesive Spray – we used half of one small can for two boards
Olfa Beginner Exacto Craft Knife
Fun Pushpins – get them when you get your board

The first thing you need to do is measure the width and height of your cork board to know how much fabric to buy.
Jane’s board was 20.5″ x 14.75″. Caitlyn’s was 24″ x 32″. For most small to medium boards a yard of fabric will do.

Next, pick fabric! You can go wild with florals, or hobbies, or a sports team. Caitlyn and Jane went a little quieter and picked a favorite color. You can change your board out as the seasons change if you want!
Then iron your fabric, pressing carefully to remove all creases.

Then you’ll want to lay your fabric on top of your board to make sure it fits right. With patterned fabrics you will want to position the fabric to ensure you have the print where you want it.
If your fabric is much larger than your board, trim it down to about 3″ on all sides so it is easier to work with.

Then you will spray the 505 Temporary Adhesive Spray directly on to the cork. Be generous to cover the entire board, being sure to cover the corners well. Starting on one side of the board, firmly press your fabric onto the sprayed cork so it will stick. Use something with a pointed edge go get the fabric creases into the corners and around the outside of the board. Smooth any creases as you go to ensure a flat finish. Then, trim your fabric at the edge of the cork by running an Olfa Beginner Exacto Craft Knife along all edges. Save your excess fabric for a scrap project. 🙂

Embellish your board as desired. Caitlyn used star pins to create a constellation and Jane has started adding notes to self. You can truly take this to the limits and go wild – add ribbon or cording, paint your frame, do a fabric collage – the options are endless!
