My client (and friend) and his wife had a baby in December. I haven’t seen him in person until today and I really wanted to make him a quilt. I spent a lot of time deciding, ummm procrastinating, because I wanted something:
- Simple and graphic
- Personalized
- Appropriate for a baby without being babyish
Sounds like one of my buffalo check baby quilts, right? Wrong. I have made so many for customers that it felt impersonal. Instead I went with this simple square (cut 6″, 5.5″ finished) with 2.5″ white dashing and a 3.5″ white border.
In the second row incit a 21″ x 6″ piece and embroidered it to match the fabric. The fabric is by Riley Blake and is a garden/flower/butterfly theme.
Looking at the fat quarter bundle, I spent a bit of time deciding whether to work across the palette or to do a single monochromatic color story. I went with the whole collection and cut up the whole fat quarter set so I can list it on my Etsy shop.
The quilting is an awesome panto from Urban Elementz called Flower Power. I love how bold and graphic it is and how beautifully it brings the quilt to life.
And now Hutch can bring this quilt home to his wife and daughter. I home baby Josephine enjoys it in the best of health.
